Strategy guide

Play smarter, not just faster.

Good solitaire strategy is usually about preserving options. The strongest players do not just take the first legal move they see — they choose the move that opens the most useful paths two or three steps later.

Universal solitaire tips

  • Reveal hidden cards early because face-down cards limit your future options more than almost any other obstacle.
  • Protect empty columns until you can use them for a strong King move or a longer sequence shift.
  • Do not rush every playable card to the foundations if it still helps you build or reorder the tableau.
  • Compare several moves before drawing from the stock so you do not bury a stronger line of play.
  • Use undo or review your move history to spot patterns that repeatedly block your board development.

How strategy changes by variant

  • Klondike rewards uncovering hidden cards and timing foundation moves carefully.
  • FreeCell rewards preserving open free cells and empty tableau columns for mobility.
  • Spider rewards building clean same-suit runs instead of messy mixed stacks.
  • Pyramid rewards removals that expose the widest set of future card choices.

What to watch during a game

Ask yourself which move reveals information, creates space, or protects future sequence movement. If a move does none of those things, it may be legal without being useful.
