Variant strategy

Spider rewards cleanup, structure, and patience.

Spider is less about racing cards to foundations and more about improving tableau shape. The best moves are usually the ones that create cleaner same-suit runs and preserve room for future repairs.

Core strategy tips

  • Prioritize building clean same-suit runs because mixed runs are only temporary scaffolding, not true long-term progress.
  • Protect empty columns carefully. In Spider, open space is what lets you reorganize difficult sections of the tableau.
  • Delay dealing new stock rows when stronger cleanup moves are still available on the board.
  • Reduce the number of partially developed columns when possible so your strongest runs are easier to protect and extend.
  • In harder suit modes, avoid creating tangled mixed stacks that will be expensive to unwind later.

1-suit vs 4-suit thinking

In 1-suit Spider, many legal moves help. In 4-suit Spider, many legal moves are traps. The harder the mode, the more important it is to preserve column space and avoid messy mixed-suit stacks.

When to deal a new row

A fresh row adds pressure to every column. Usually you want to delay it until you have exhausted meaningful cleanup options and stabilized your strongest runs.
