Variant strategy

Tournament is a timing game, not a tableau builder.

Because tableau building is forbidden, progress depends on preserving access windows in reserve and foundations. Strong play is mostly about when to spend flexibility, not where to stack cards.

Core Tournament tips

  • Open foundation starts first: every ace or king released expands the move graph for that suit.
  • Do not rush Deal Row while foundation or reserve-space moves still exist.
  • Use empty reserve slots as temporary release valves for blocked tableau tops.
  • Watch both foundation directions per suit so one lane does not trap cards needed by the other.
  • Before redealing tableau, squeeze every possible transfer from reserve and foundations.

Best mid-game habit

When a reserve slot opens, test whether moving a tableau top there reveals a foundation starter or unlocks a blocked suit lane before committing to a row deal.

Common mistake

The most common mistake is dealing a new tableau row too soon, which buries playable tops and shortens the path to a dead board.

Compare the play feel

Tournament shares Canfield's pressure and two-deck scope, but removes tableau building. It feels closer to an access-management puzzle where stock timing and reserve openings decide the run.
