Variant strategy

Archway is solved by sequencing, not luck.

Every card is visible from the start. The game rewards players who can plan three to five moves ahead, track the gap between dual foundations, and spend tableau space efficiently.

Core Archway tips

  • All information is open — use it. Scan both decks before making any move.
  • Track each suit's gap between its up foundation and down foundation. Cards in the middle of the range are the most urgent to place.
  • Don't rush to fill foundations early if it blocks releasing a key arch card you'll need two moves later.
  • Empty tableau columns are rare: spend them to enable a sequence of arch moves, not as single-card parking.
  • The arch piles let you pick any card of that rank — choose the copy whose removal unblocks the most.
  • Look at your four tableau columns as a pipeline: the top card of each is your throughput. Keep at least two columns flowing at all times.

Best early priority

Before touching the tableau, count which suit has the largest gap between its up foundation and down foundation. That suit's middle ranks are your hardest cards to place — make sure there is a path to get them onto a foundation before they get buried under tableau column tops.

Common mistake

Players waste empty columns on single speculative arch cards rather than using the space to cycle a blocked tableau column. An empty column is most valuable as a temporary buffer during a multi-step sequence, not as permanent parking.

Who will like it

Archway suits players who prefer open-information games where every card is visible and the puzzle is purely about sequencing. If you enjoy FreeCell-style planning over random draws, Archway will feel rewarding. If you prefer the tension of unknown cards, try Crescent instead.
