Suit-building variant

Lady Betty Solitaire

Deal cards one at a time from the stock. Each card must immediately go to one of four foundations (built up by suit, starting at ranks 2, 3, 4, and 5 with circular wrap from King back to Ace) or be placed face-up on one of six waste piles. The first card of the correct starting rank placed on a foundation locks its suit permanently.

Why play Lady Betty?

Lady Betty combines the clean one-at-a-time dealing of Sir Tommy with suit-locked foundations and a six-pile waste area, creating a game that rewards careful tracking of which suits remain in the stock.

Rules overview

Deal cards one at a time. Each card goes immediately to a foundation or waste pile. Foundations start at 2, 3, 4, 5 and build by suit upward with circular wrap (King → Ace of same suit). Each foundation locks its suit when its first card arrives.

Strategy tips

  • Each foundation locks to the suit of whatever card of that starting rank arrives first — you cannot choose, so spread suits evenly across waste piles early.
  • Six waste piles give you breathing room; resist filling them up quickly or you lose that flexibility.
  • Wraparound means a King leads to an Ace of the same suit — track how many cards of each suit remain.
