Canfield Solitaire

A classic casino solitaire with a 13-card reserve pile (the “demon”), a draw-three stock, four tableau columns, and four foundations. The rank of the first card dealt to the foundations sets the base rank for all four suits — foundations build upward in suit with wrap-around (King cycles back to Ace). Tableau columns build downward in alternating colors, also with wrap-around. Move every card to the foundations to win.

Why Canfield is a classic

Canfield is tighter than Klondike because the reserve and base-rank foundations shape the entire game from the first move. Wraparound rules create unusual tactical options, but they also make bad sequencing harder to recover from.

What to watch

The opening foundation card sets the build rank for every suit, so always think about the full cycle instead of only the next step. The reserve also changes what counts as a practical move at any given moment.

Strategy tips

  • Build around the reserve instead of ignoring it, since the top reserve card is a constant source of forced priorities.
  • Because tableau and foundation ranks wrap, always check whether an unusual move preserves a stronger cycle later.
  • Empty columns are flexible in Canfield, so use them to reorganize blocked color sequences early.
