Westcliff Solitaire

Ten columns start with three cards each — only the top card of each column is face-up. Build tableau piles down in alternating colors. Deal one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile; the top waste card is always available to play. Send all cards to the four foundations, ascending from Ace to King by suit, to win.

How Westcliff differs from Klondike

Westcliff expands the tableau to ten columns and removes the King-only restriction on empty spaces, making it friendlier than Klondike for managing the board. The single-card waste mechanism keeps each stock deal low-risk but also low-reward compared to a three-card draw.

Core idea

The wider tableau gives you more room to manoeuvre sequences, but with 22 cards in the stock you must pace your deals carefully. Prioritise uncovering face-down cards early and use empty columns as temporary holding spots before committing to a long sequence.

Win rate

Westcliff is highly winnable — roughly 9 out of 10 deals are completable with good play. Focus on keeping the waste pile clear by immediately playing useful waste cards onto the tableau or foundations before dealing again.

Strategy tips

  • Uncover face-down cards as early as possible to open more options.
  • Use empty columns as staging areas, not permanent homes.
  • Deal from the stock only when no tableau move is available.
  • Play waste cards immediately onto the tableau or foundations when possible.
