Placement puzzle strategy

Place each drawn card with its exit in mind.

Strategy Solitaire and Last Chance draw one card at a time into holding piles. Only pile tops can reach the four Ace-to-King suit foundations. The order in which you bury ranks determines which cards can leave later.

Make lower ranks accessible

Each suit foundation needs its 2 before its 3, then its 4. If a 9 of Hearts covers a 2 of Hearts in a holding pile, the 2 cannot leave until the 9 does, and the 9 cannot reach its foundation until every earlier Heart is placed. A different pile for the 9 keeps the 2 accessible. This is why a free holding pile can be worth more than a neat-looking stack.

Before placing a card, compare the top ranks of the available piles with the next rank needed by its suit foundation. A high card over a low card of the same suit often creates a direct dependency cycle. Distinct piles can act as separate suit lanes when the deal permits, but the pile count is limited.

Strategy Solitaire: eight piles and delayed play

Strategy Solitaire has eight holding piles. During the stock deal, a drawn Ace may go directly to its foundation, but other drawn cards must enter a holding pile. Cards already in holding piles cannot move to foundations until the stock is exhausted. Judge a placement by the order in which its pile can unwind after the last draw.

Last Chance: seven piles and a hidden reserve

Last Chance sets one card aside face down and deals the other 51 into seven holding piles. A drawn card may enter its suit foundation whenever it fits, and exposed pile tops may also build to foundations during the deal. An exposed top may move to an empty holding pile, creating a temporary route around a blocker.

After the stock is empty, reveal the reserved card. You cannot plan its rank in advance, so keep foundation access open across suits. Because only seven piles are available, using one as a temporary holding space has a larger cost than in Strategy Solitaire.
