Variant strategy

Superior Canfield is a puzzle you can read before you solve it.

The fully visible reserve turns Superior Canfield from a game of partial information into a planning challenge. With unlimited redeals removing most stock pressure, your main job is to find the optimal order to clear the reserve.

Core Superior Canfield tips

  • Study the entire reserve before touching the stock — you have full information from the start.
  • Plan which reserve cards to play first to open the most foundation paths.
  • Unlimited redeals reduce stock pressure; invest that patience into setting up reserve clearance.
  • Alternating-color tableau (same as standard Canfield) means color sequences matter; plan ahead.
  • Empty tableau piles accept any card — use them as temporary staging areas for reserve reorganization.
  • Because the reserve is fully visible, you can calculate whether the game is winnable before investing many moves.

The open reserve changes the game entirely

In standard Canfield you discover the reserve one card at a time. In Superior Canfield you see all 13 at once. This lets you identify which tableau columns to build so that reserve cards flow freely — a skill that separates good players from great ones.

Common mistake

Even with unlimited redeals, players often cycle the stock repeatedly without first maximizing reserve plays. Each reserve card placed on the foundation or tableau is a permanent gain; stock cycling just reorders the same waste pile.
