Superior Canfield strategy
All thirteen reserve cards are face-up, so you can inspect their order before moving. Only the top reserve card is playable. The rest of the deal follows Canfield's random base-rank foundations, four alternating-color tableau columns, three-card stock draws, and recyclable waste.

Trace the next reserve card before moving the top
A reserve-to-foundation move and a reserve-to-tableau move both uncover the same next card. Compare the destination each move occupies. The fully visible reserve lets you plan one or two cards ahead without pretending that a buried card can be played directly.
Constructed choice: Seven of Hearts is the reserve top, with Six of Clubs immediately beneath. An Eight of Spades heads a tableau column. Placing the Seven on that Eight leaves a red Seven on top for the black Six; a foundation move for the Seven would uncover the Six but remove that tableau landing place. The tableau route matters only if no better destination for the Six is already available.
Use visible order, not imagined access
Knowing a buried reserve card is useful does not make it available. Find a legal exit for each top card in order, and check how many tableau columns those exits occupy. A stock draw can help create a missing landing card, but the waste still exposes only its top card.
