Variant strategy

In Chameleon, every card drawn is your last chance to use it.

With no redeals and only 3 tableau columns, Chameleon punishes impulsive drawing. The best players treat the stock like a countdown clock: get as many reserve and foundation plays as possible before it runs out.

Core Chameleon tips

  • Every draw is permanent — scan the waste and board before clicking the stock.
  • Any-suit building gives flexibility, but use it to free the reserve, not just to tidy piles.
  • Three tableau columns means empty columns are precious; avoid filling one unnecessarily.
  • Focus on the reserve first: each reveal from the reserve unlocks more future moves.
  • Because there are no redeals, prioritize foundation plays over tableau-only shuffles.
  • Wrap-around sequences (Ace on King) can unlock jams — keep them in mind.

Why the no-redeal rule changes everything

In most Canfield variants you can cycle through the stock multiple times. In Chameleon each card appears exactly once, so a draw you bury under waste without acting on is often lost. Prioritize action over exploration.

Common mistake

Many players fill all three tableau columns early and then have no room to maneuver when the reserve starts delivering awkward cards. Keep at least one column as a temporary holding area as long as possible.
