Variant strategy

Congress is a careful stock-management game.

You get only one pass through the stock, so advance planning separates wins from losses. Success comes from building efficient tableau sequences, finding Aces early, and thinking several moves ahead.

Core Congress strategy tips

  • Work to expose Aces early by building down in tableau and carefully using your stock.
  • Remember you only get ONE pass through the stock—plan your moves ahead rather than playing reactively.
  • Build long sequences in the tableau to keep cards flowing and minimize waste.
  • Keep as many tableau piles filled as possible so empty spaces can be filled from stock instead of waste.
  • Move cards to foundations as soon as Aces are available, but do not rush single cards away if they block better plays.

Best early priority

Expose Aces first. Build down aggressively in the tableau to uncover hidden Aces before you use up too much of your precious stock pass.

Common mistake

Wasting your stock pass on low-value moves or failing to build long down-sequences means running out of moves before finding all Aces.

Congress is similar to Forty Thieves (Napoleon at St. Helena) but with eight columns instead of ten and a simpler single-deck layout. Both reward careful stock management and long tableau sequences.
