Two-deck variant

Casket Solitaire

A moderately difficult two-deck patience game. Eight tableau piles form the Casket — they build down in suit. Five face-up reserve cards form the Lid; as each Lid card is played, it is replaced by one of the thirteen hidden Jewel cards. Deal from the stock one card at a time into the lowest-count waste pile or onto the tableau. Move all 104 cards to the eight foundations (two per suit, Ace to King) to win. No redeals are permitted.

What is Casket Solitaire?

Casket Solitaire is a two-deck patience game with a distinctive layered reserve structure. Two sections of the layout — called the Lid and the Jewels — interact to create a reveal mechanic: Lid cards are visible and accessible, but each Lid position covers a hidden Jewel card beneath it. Using a Lid card reveals its Jewel, expanding your available options. All 104 cards must eventually reach eight suit foundations (Ace through King).

Full rules

Two 52-card decks (104 cards). The layout is divided into the Casket structure: a Lid section of face-up accessible cards, each covering a face-down Jewel beneath it, and a tableau section. Tableau builds downward by same suit. Eight foundations build upward by suit from Ace to King. A stock deals to a waste pile; the waste top is always available.

When a Lid card is played (to tableau or foundation), its Jewel is revealed and becomes accessible. Win when all 104 cards reach foundations.

Lid and Jewel sequencing

The Lid/Jewel structure creates a reveal puzzle within the larger foundation race. Each Lid card you play opens a new card — which may be immediately useful or may change your priorities. Before playing any Lid card, consider what the Jewel reveal might bring: if the Lid card is not urgently needed on a foundation, it may be worth waiting until the Jewel’s timing is more predictable.

Same-suit tableau building

Like Napoleon at St Helena, Casket builds the tableau by same suit only. This restricts legal destinations to at most two per card (both copies of the one-rank-higher same-suit card), making blockages common. Tracking which copies of needed ranks are accessible in the Lid, Jewels, waste, and tableau simultaneously is essential for avoiding dead ends.
