Variant strategy

Beleaguered Castle rewards patient, far-sighted planning.

Every card is visible from deal one, and aces are already home — but the 2s are almost certainly buried. Winning consistently means planning card liberation sequences two or three moves deep before making your first move.

Core Beleaguered Castle tips

  • Locate all 2s at the start of the game — freeing them to the foundations is your first priority.
  • Empty columns are your most powerful resource; only vacate a column when you have a clear plan for it.
  • Prefer moves that expose useful buried cards over moves that just reshuffle visible tops.
  • Because the full layout is visible, map out two or three chained moves before committing to any one.
  • Avoid stacking high cards on empty columns early — you will need the space for lower-value maneuvers.

The early priority that matters most

Survey the full tableau before moving anything. Identify which columns contain 2s and trace what needs to shift to expose each one. The first few moves should serve that liberation plan, not just make any available transfer.

Common mistake

The most common mistake is vacating a column without a plan, then filling it with a high card that blocks the very access you needed the empty space for.

Why players enjoy it

Beleaguered Castle strips away all the luck of stock drawing and gives you the full puzzle at once. Players who enjoy pure order-of-operations challenges — especially those who like FreeCell but want a harder constraint — tend to find Beleaguered Castle extremely satisfying.
